It seems like a long time ago, but remember when Billy Donovan was the coach of the Orlando Magic? Yeah, it only lasted for about two days, but what a glorious run it was. They didn’t lose a game as I recall.
Donovan was fresh off back-to-back NCAA titles and fresh off flirting with the job at the University of Kentucky. But Eddie Munster quickly changed his mind, and ran back to 1313 Mockingbird Lane to rejoin Herman and Grandpa. Strike that, Donovan quickly changed his mind, and ran back to Gainesville and signed a fat contract extension.
Orlando was left with Stan Van Gundy, and everyone laughed.
Let’s review what’s happened since then.
Florida has become the first team in history to miss the NCAA Tournament two consecutive seasons after winning a national title. Gator fans have forgotten the school has a basketball program. But they’re much happier to spend their time building shrines to Tim Tebow. (I don’t know about you, but I feel like a much better person just for having typed the words, Tim Tebow.)
In Van Gundy’s first season with the Magic, they won 52 games and won their first playoff series in 12 years. This year, the Magic won 59 games, and now they’re in the NBA Finals for the second time in franchise history.
Seems like a happy ending for all. Magic fans are thrilled, Bill Donovan (I’m going to call him Bill since he’s not 7 years old) has a ton of money and can coach in obscurity and all Gator fans care about is making sure Urban Meyer is happy.
