Maybe it was because he was one dunk away from laying a goose egg from the floor in the fourth quarter of the biggest game of the Cleveland Cavaliers’ season. Or maybe it was just plain, old frustration after watching his team’s season go up in smoke after posting the NBA’s best record during the regular season.
Regardless, the final image that fans watching TNT’s telecast of the Cavs’ season-ending loss to Orlando in the Eastern Conference finals was of LeBron James storming off the court milliseconds after the clock ran out on Cleveland’s season Saturday night. No congratulatory handshakes or pats on the back from the Cavs’ mega-star, just a hasty exit to the locker room that made LeBron look like he was fleeing the scene of the crime.
Which, in a way, he was. The topic of whether LeBron should stay or go in Cleveland will undoubtedly be discussed ad nauseum during the next few months as James prepares to enter what could be a lame-duck season for the Cavs this fall. In my mind, however, it’s a no-brainer. King James needs to find himself a new Court, because the failure of Cleveland’s front office to assemble a decent supporting cast for LeBron borders on criminal. The Cavs have had six seasons to compile a quality roster for their superstar, and they’ve failed to do so. In reality, the only reason their win total has continued on an upward trajectory each year is because LeBron himself has improved each year. Seriously, take a close look at the team’s roster from The King’s 2003-04 rookie year and tell us how this current bunch represents a marked improvement.
As for Saturday night, however, LeBron’s post-game haste to exit the floor came off as petulant. Hey, we like the kid. About 99 percent of the time, we’re amazingly impressed by how well he handles all the attention, scrutiny, etc. But bolting the court without nary a butt-slap for Dwight Howard & Co. was bush league, period. There’s no doubt he was devastated by the loss and his team’s putrid performance, but the Magic went toe-to-toe with you in a tough, physical series and proved themselves to be the better team. They deserved a little dap from the best player in the game. That’s all we’re sayin’.
