Did you know the WNBA is getting ready for its 13th season? It’s true. The season starts Saturday, and we just know it’s gonna be another competitive season with …. uhhh … Los Angeles …. battling …. uhhh.
So anyway, what better way to tip things off than this exciting news from the Phoenix Mercury. Or the team formerly known as the Phoenix Mercury. The team has reached a three-year deal with LifeLock to put the sponsor’s name on their jerseys. What’s the big deal about a little corporate logo on the jersey, you ask? Turns out the marketing wizards at the WNBA — a league bankrolled by the NBA, which is responsible for such brilliant ideas as, er, the WNBA — have decided to take this whole sponsorship thing to the next level. The team is putting LifeLock in place of the team’s name on their jerseys.
Brilliant.
NBA commissioner David Stern says, “This deal serves as a blueprint for other associations of its kind with all our WNBA teams.”
We’re a bit disappointed in the choice of LifeLock, though. C’mon WNBA, you know who your target audience is. And since Stern is all hot-and-bothered over making the NBA an international league, we suggest the next team look to our favorite cookie maker from Finland for sponsorship inspiration.
