Can we just go ahead and start the college football season today? In the past few seasons, it’s been the college football world vs. the Southeastern Conference, and the SEC has been the clear winner. Now it appears the league’s coaches have grown tired of spanking the rest of the country around, and instead have decided to start turning on each other.
You’d think that a conference with the likes of Steve Spurrier, Nick Saban and Urban Meyer storming sidelines on Saturdays wouldn’t need any new villians. But then, like a gift from the football follie heavens, along comes Lane Kiffin to add to the madness. He’s managed to piss off everyone outside of Knoxville, Tenn., and he’s not backing down. He’s taken swipes at Spurrier and Meyer, and they’ve fired back.
Things have gotten so crazy, SEC commissioner Mike (rhymes with “slime”) Slive, told the coaches to shut the hell up at the league’s spring meeting Tuesday in Destin, Fla. Slive may be tired of the coaches talking smack to each other, but we say bring it on. We’ll take crazy megalomaniac coaches over on-base percentages and quality start ratios anytime.
Kiffin better hope that stellar recruiting class he’s lured to Tennessee pays off quickly. The Volunteers open SEC play at the Swamp, and as Georgia coach Mark Richt knows, Meyer has a good memory. Early prediction, Tebows 84, Vols 0.
