Morning wood: Butt steak from Omaha
We’re still trying to wrap our heads around this whole Sammy Sosa/steroid thing, and by wrap our heads around we mean why we’re supposed to give a frog’s fat patootie.
At least the boys over at Deadspin seem to share the same annoyance that we have with the issue … namely the oh-so-timely leaks that seem to spring forth from these once-”anonymous” tests. Why is it no one seems to be taking the vaunted New York Times (or Major League Baseball) to task over their shaky sourcing for these stories? Look, in all probability, Sosa and Alex Rodriguez juiced themselves to the gills. We get it. What we don’t get is why the NYT can produce stories quoting anonymous laywers, and media outlets from Bristol to Bangladesh accept it as the gospel truth.
Oh, there’s one other problem. Once again, Jose Canseco has been shown to be the only honest man in the room when it comes to the steroid issue in baseball. Hell, he told us Sosa was on steroids, and most members of the sports media responded by rolling their eyes and saying “that’s just Jose trying to sell books.”
Explain to us again how that’s different from what the NYT is doing?
